What is mega pixel in camera?
Mega: 10^6 = 1,000,000
A pixel is a a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed.
A camera pixel is a smallest element of the photo sensor (usually a set of 3 CMOS photo transistor: (green/blue/red)) of a camera. So, joining both of them, a mega pixel is 10^6 pixels. A digital camera has an image sensor, with a definite number of pixels in a two dimensional array/grid. (much like dots on a plane, arranged in a specific order)

The number of pixels in a camera sensor (as per 2015) is usually large and is considered in the order of 10^6 pixels. So you have camera / camera sensors being sold as (x - MP camera / sensor).
So, when you read a camera is 20MP, what it means is that image which it produces has 20 million pixels in them. Or the sensor has (20 Million x 3) CMOS sensors.
A very important note is that, not every sensor has the same number of blue green and red CMOS photoreceptors in a camera. The green spectrum being the largest, they are usually arranged like this:
