Apple iPhone X is the
most expensive smartphone ever made by the company. In the US it costs $999 for
the 64GB model and $1,149 for the 256GB model. But how much money is Apple
actually getting out of it? Although the company never reveals such
information, TechInsights (via Reuters) seems to have estimated the cost of the
components used in the smartphone.
According to estimates, it could have taken Apple $357.50 to make the iPhone X. If the mentioned amount is true, Apple
has 64% gross margin, higher than the iPhone 8's 59%.
It has also been mentioned that several parts of the iPhone X costs more than
the components used in the iPhone X. The highlight of the smartphone, it's
5.7-inch OLED display, alone is said to cost around $65.50. The 4.7-inch LCD
display of the iPhone 8 reportedly costs $36.
Furthermore, the stainless steel
chassis of the flagship smartphone is said to cost $36, around $15 more than
that of iPhone 8's.
It is worth adding that the amount
mentioned here is the price of the components only. This excludes the
manufacturing cost and capital spent on research and development, advertising,
distribution and more.
In a previous report by HIS Markit, the iPhone 8with 64GB storage could have
priced Apple $247.51 (only raw components). The iPhone 8 Plus components could
have priced $288.08. Both are more than the components used in the iPhone 7and
the iPhone 7 Plus.
The iPhone X is the only one of the three new iPhones launched this year which
comes with an OLED display. The smartphone went up on sale in India few days
ago.
It comes in two variants based on 64GB and 256GB storage versions. The 64GB
version is priced at Rs 89,000 while the 256GB model costs Rs 1,02,000. The
latter is also the first iPhone in India to cross the Rs 1 lakh mark.
